My husband and I absolutely loved this movie, however I suggest watching this in two goes as it is a long movie.
What a wonderful montage of Gloria Steinems remarkable life to date. Creative scenes in which she talks to older or younger versions of herself. Interjections of artistic anime scenes keep things light.
Wonderful depiction of all of the forward thinking women from every background and walk of life pushing for equal rights.

(CNN) Multiple actresses play Gloria Steinem at different ages in "The Glorias, " a more conventional version of the device used in the Bob Dylan biography "I'm Not There. " The key performances are strong, but director/co-writer Julie Taymor's movie meanders too much, dragging through the beginning and again toward the end. Flitting about in time, the film features two youngsters playing the feminist icon in her youth, with Alicia Vikander and Julianne Moore portraying her, respectively, as a young woman -- introduced traveling in India -- and an older one who has found her voice. Periodically, the different Glorias interact, in a sort of "If I knew then what I know now" kind of way. "Travel is the best education, " says her father (Timothy Hutton), whose moneymaking schemes generally flop, leading to unsettling days before Gloria begins to carve out her footprint as a writer, dealing with the overt sexism and condescension that the "Mad Men" era entailed. It's around then, roughly 40 minutes in, when "The Glorias" finally starts to coalesce, making the time devoted to her early biography feel excessive, especially considering that there's relatively little about her personal life once she's an adult. Adapted from Steinem's autobiography "My Life on the Road, " the movie deals with her undercover expose working at the Playboy Club (resulting in the memorable 1963 Show magazine piece "A Bunny's Tale"), as well as fending off lecherous bosses, getting asked to make coffee for male colleagues, and being told that it's "rare to see a woman writer with a sense of humor" and "You write like a man. " Steinem eventually embarks on the venture of launching Ms. magazine, dismissed in an actual news clip by "60 Minutes'" Harry Reasoner. Wade and women's reproductive rights. "The Glorias" acknowledges Steinem's sweeping influence with the idea that it takes more than one actor to bring her to life. I t takes less than a minute into The Glorias, the director Julie Taymor’s shallow biopic of the feminist icon Gloria Steinem, to realize something is off. Four iterations of Steinem at different ages – child (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), teen (Lulu Wilson), young woman (Alicia Vikander), and middle-aged (Julianne Moore) – sit on an old Greyhound bus going … somewhere, each shaded a strange and uncomfortably wan gray against the colorful scenery out the window. Why edit half the scene in color, half in black and white, like the early iPhoto effects of the mid-2000s? There doesn’t seem to be a reason other than to gesture at depth – one of many baffling artistic choices that turn a nearly two-and-a-half-hour film on what should be a fascinating, mettlesome, complicated character study into an uneven, trite and at times laughably shoddy mess. Steinem’s long life and career (she is now 86 years old) as a journalist, second-wave feminist leader and the co-founder of Ms Magazine in 1972 has been trailblazing and often heroic, if not immune to critique. There is vast material for an exploration of shifting American womanhood and the contradictions of activism within and outside of institutions. But instead of meaningful conflict, The Glorias, based on Steinem’s 2015 memoir My Life on the Road, presents Steinem as an unerring and widely appealing hero, one who can drop into a bar in South Dakota, as Moore’s iteration does in the film’s opening minutes, and receive praise from a female biker for inspiring her to “take to the road on my own” before speeding away in the reflection of Steinem’s signature aviator shades. The rest of The Glorias is similarly obvious and cloying while also shifting wildly in tone. The screenplay by Taymor and Sarah Ruhl splices scenes from Steinem’s life into a narrative whose general trajectory is chronological but seesaws awkwardly between the years. The young Steinem, book-hungry and observant, is close with her father, Leo (Timothy Hutton) an itinerant and unreliable antiques dealer who keeps the family on the move. As a teenager, Steinem cares for her mother (Enid Graham), an invalid struggling with mental illness, in Toledo, Ohio, after Leo abandons the family for the open road. The pain from this period occasionally leaks into an overlong stretch of time in which a miscast Vikander plays Steinem as a recent college graduate in India and later intrepid young writer in New York with a jarringly bad attempt at Steinem’s midwestern accent, flat but with none of the heartiness. Moore plays some of the feminist movement’s greatest iconographic hits – the 1977 National Women’s Conference, the first issue of Ms Magazine – as the fully grown Steinem. All four versions of Steinem commingle, in that uncomfortable black and white, on the bus to nowhere, for grimace-inducing scenes which serve to make broad thematic statements. The conceit of a character communing with her past ghosts is not an inherently cringey one – HBO’s The Tale successfully provoked unsettling admissions of complicity and the revisions of memory by pitting different-aged versions of its main character against herself. The Glorias’ main conceit of multiple Steinems feels, by contrast, like a shallow gimmick whose potential is squandered by bizarre directing choices – one scene that commutes anger into a red-hued, poorly executed Wizard of Oz tornado dream sequence made me cackle out loud. It’s a shame, because the bantering of The Glorias has at its core a worthwhile message: that a woman can grow into owning her choices, and can synthesize her personal experiences into a coherent, expansive political philosophy. That’s a good faith reading of a project that I would like to believe was intended to do more than just lionize its star by sanding down her real, human complications. The lost opportunity is highlighted by Mrs America, a show released earlier this year, which reanimates the feminism culture wars of the 1970s with nuance. Mrs America’s Steinem, played guilelessly by Rose Byrne, falters in judgment, grapples with her notoriety and instinctive press magnetism, and learns from the thorny gaps between the utopian vision of Ms Magazine and its actual environment for black and queer editors. Most insidiously, it recasts Steinem’s hard-won political evolution into a hero’s journey of magical discoveries, in which she absorbs an intersectional approach through boldly stated themes said by people of color, then exhibits her exceptionalism by merely listening. Black feminist leaders such as Dorothy Pitman Hughes (Janelle Monáe) and Flo Kennedy (Lorraine Toussaint), labor rights leader Dolores Huerta (Monica Sanchez), and Native American activist and real-life best friend Wilma Mankiller (Kimberly Guerrero) serve merely as imparters of wisdom quickly huddled under Steinem’s star power rather than complicating, sparring minds of their own. Another film might have mined Steinem’s remarkable life for its complications and contradictions, but The Glorias settles for slapdash iconography – Steinem picks out her signature aviators because as a saleswoman laments they “hide your beautiful face”, and declares “Martin Luther King is leading his civil rights march on Washington. I want to cover it! ” The nowhere bus, ultimately, colors in with a sea of pink “pussy’ hats and the real Steinem, en route to the 2017 Women’s March in Washington – a genuinely inspiring show of feminist activism whose many rough edges and various hues are, like Steinem’s biography in The Glorias, leached of their power in favor of an easy story. Filmmaker Julie Taymor has never operated within conventional parameters, but then again, neither has her latest cinematic subject, feminist icon and political firebrand Gloria Steinem. Taymor, who has only dipped into biopics once before, with the similarly creative “Frida, ” knows that life doesn’t move in a straight line, which could have scared her off from adapting Steinem’s road-trip autobiography. But the road to becoming “Gloria Steinem” was winding, and the best parts of the wonderfully inventive “ The Glorias ” are when Taymor takes her various eponymous Glorias on some artful detours. Steinem, fortunately, has many of them to offer. Based on Steinem’s bestselling 2015 book “My Life on the Road, ” and adapted by Taymor and first-time scribe Sarah Ruhl, the film imagines four different Glorias (played mostly by Julianne Moore and Alicia Vikander), following Steinem through some of her most important travels (mostly on the road, all of them through her extraordinary life). The film’s various Glorias appear in conversation with each other, both literal and figurative, as they travel through “The Glorias” in a large Greyhound bus — again, both literally and figuratively. A straight line could be plotted through the feature which, despite its imaginative storytelling structure, still manages to hit all of the big moments in Steinem’s life. While they bend over and switch back on each other — one moment, Vikander’s Gloria is eating an ice-cream sundae to celebrate walking out on a sexist, predatory editor, the next, she’s played by pint-sized Ryan Kiera Armstrong, eating Breyers out of the box with her family — Taymor and editor Sabine Hoffman’s assemblage is easy to follow and emotionally astute. While she was a kid, the Steinems were practiced travelers — Gloria’s father, Leo (warmly played by Timothy Hutton), lived by a maxim he shares early in the film: “Traveling’s the best education. ” Gloria never seemed able (or willing) to kick the bug. “The Glorias” follows Vikander back on the road both alone (through India after her graduation from Smith College) and occasionally with her father, with flashbacks to her rooted tween years (then played by Lulu Wilson), interspersed into the lead-up to the most well-known portions of her professional life. Vikander’s performance is arguably the meatiest, as she portrays Steinem through her early journalism career (including a sequence following her research for her turning-point article about going undercover as a Playboy Bunny) and turn towards organization and activism. It’s Moore, however, who gets to dig into the creation of Ms. Magazine and the Women’s Liberation Rally, pulling Steinem through decades of her life before the real Gloria Steinem takes over at the film’s conclusion. Even when the various Glorias are talking to each other, in actual tension with all of the others, its Moore’s eldest Gloria to whom all of the others defer, as each of them move toward becoming her, the person she always was. Psychedelic touches and feverish fantasies don’t always land, sometimes even both working and not working within relatively short amounts of time; a sequence in which all of the Glorias sweep up an artless male interviewer into a “Wizard of Oz”-styled storm is somehow both brilliant and silly. Other similarly effects-laden sequences look unfinished and rushed (before the film’s Sundance premiere, Taymor said the film was just finished a week ago). And yet the rare moments when Taymor adheres to traditional biopic tropes are still more out of place, like when 20-something Gloria finds her signature aviator glasses and starts sporting them even though (or because of) the fact that they “hide her pretty face. ” It’s an origin story for an infamous accessory, and while the reasoning behind Gloria’s choice of eyewear is compelling, the execution hits a false note. Steinem’s understanding and respect of intersectionality played a major part in her evolution as a leader, and the film is stuffed with appearances by a cross-section of other feminist luminaries who have been important to Steinem, and the women’s movement, over the years. The supporting cast alone could outfit 10 other biopics, including brilliant turns by Bette Midler as Bella Abzug, Janelle Monae as Dorothy Pitman Hughes, Kimberly Guerrero as Wilma Mankiller, and scene-stealing work by Lorraine Toussaint as the wonderfully outrageous Flo Kennedy. Steinem’s affection for nonviolence and predisposition to listening to others remain inspirational, but Taymor never attempts to saint her; at one point, a rattled Moore freaks out on a racist cab driver in a scene that both galvanizes and humanizes her. Despite a near-two-and-a-half-hour running time, moments like that prove how much more of Steinem there still is to show and appreciate, and how Taymor has cleverly hacked through a rich world and life to pull out enough profound truths to remind us all of both her — and Steinem’s — unstoppable voice.
